Trample
Trample is a core keyword ability. It has appeared in most Magic: The Gathering sets (though for a while it didn't appear in the Core Set). Trample is found mainly on green cards, though red and black also use it.
Normally, creatures that are blocked deal all their damage to the blocking creature(s) and none to the defending player. For example, a 10/10 creature that's blocked by a 1/1 deals 10 damage to the 1/1 creature. Creatures with trample, however, may deal excess damage (damage that is above that needed to deal lethal damage to all creatures blocking it) to the defending player. In the above example, if the 10/10 creature had trample, it could deal 1 damage to the 1/1 (enough to destroy it usually) and 9 damage to the defending player.
Note that damage prevention effects don't factor into how much damage a trampling creature has to deal to its blockers. Again, in the above example, say the 10/10 trampling creature is black, and the 1/1 has protection from black. The attacking player may still choose to deal just 1 damage to the blocking creature and 9 to the defending player, even though that 1 damage to the blocking creature will be prevented.
