Protection

Protection is a core keyword ability. It has appeared in most Magic: The Gathering sets. Protection is found mainly on white cards, though all colors have some protection abilities.

A creature with Protection from foo (as the ability is written on the card) has the following qualities:

• All damage dealt to the creature from foo sources is prevented.
• The creature can't be enchanted by foo enchantments or equipped by foo equipment.
• The creature can't be blocked by foo creatures.
• The creature can't be targeted by foo spells or abilities.

A mnemonic for remembering what protection prevents is DEBT: Damage, Enchantment (or Equipment), Blocking, and Targeting.

Foo can be nearly any quality. The most common quality is color, although card types and creature types are also used.
